St Agnes’ Community Later Starter Orchestra (LSO)
represented  at BTHVN 2021, Dresden, Germany.

St Agnes’ Community Later Starter Orchestra (LSO) was the sole Irish representative at BTHVN 2021 – an international conference of amateur orchestras organised by the German Federation of Amateur Orchestras(BDLO) – in Late September in Dresden.

The conference focused on the opportunities and challenges of music making in amateur and professional orchestras on an international level
Delegates present from 40 countries, together with online representation from all continents, reported the impact of the pandemic on amateur orchestras in their areas and using the theme ‘Passion meets Profession’ discussed the synergies between amateur and professional orchestras and musicians.
Existing models in the USA and Eastern Europe were compared and good practise in sustainable and successful orchestra tutorship was discussed while the online contributions from Ghana, Kenya, Colombia and  Argentina provided insight into the global impact of music making and orchestral practice though ominously the expected online contribution from the National Institute of Music in Kabul was ‘not possible at this time’.

St Agnes' Summer Strings 202One

Summer Strings 2021
Explore Series

St Agnes’ CCMA’s  Annual String Summer camp was a fantastic  success.  It took place on-line over a five day period from the 28th June and culminated with the annual end of year concert on the 2nd of July. Cormac O’hAodáin was the conductor.
This year's Summer String Camp was  a camp with a difference in so many ways. Seven string players from St Agnes’ Community Late Starter Orchestra (LSO) played the repertoire.   Musicians Cillian O’Breacháin, Aisling Drury Byrne and Shane Cavanagh also joined the group in the CCMA.    The rehearsals were live-streamed to almost sixty players including to a player who zoomed in from New York.  Players from Galway, Wicklow, Wexford, Dublin, Louth, Donegal, Kildare, Meath  also attended the rehearsals.  Darby Carroll, bass player and sound engineer ensured the sound from the  CCMA was perfect for all to hear.
There was an opportunity for Summer Camp participants and the wider community to zoom in and listen to topics related to music and the arts by attending the  Explore Lunchtime Series.
On Monday from Switzerland Clíodhna Ní Aodáin gave an inspiring workshop, "Discover Your Own Inner Music". On Tuesday, not to be outdone, her brother Cormac gave us a history of his own professional instrument the horn, emphasising the historical background of the horn in Ireland, and concluding his talk with a live performance of the final Movement of Mozart's quintet for horn, violin, two violas and cello.
On Wednesday Denise Ní Dhuibhir, gave us an insight into the visual arts in the lifetime of one of the composers of the week, Ralph Vaughan Williams. She paid particular attention to Jack Butler Yeats, brother of the poet William Butler Yeats, and encouraged us all to go to the galleries and see some of the painting she discussed in the weeks ahead.  On Thursday Cillian O’Breacháin, string tutor for the week, delivered an inspirational lecture accompanied by wonderful excerpts on the life and work of Ralph Vaughan Williams, and concluded his talk by performing part of Vaughan Williams' most famous work for solo violin, The Lark Ascending.
On Friday we were joined by Peter Whelan, artistic director of the Irish Baroque Orchestra, to give a talk with the intriguing title Mr Handel’s  Adventures in Dublin.

Roll on next year!

Carnival of Orchestras

Carnival of Orchestras

A virtual music event with a difference took place on Sunday May 9th when more than 150 children aged 7 to 12 from nine orchestras played together-from-home in a music programme, accompanying prepared tracks on Zoom.

movements of THE COVID SAGA, composed by Robert Mahon for his orchestra in Kiltra School of Music, arrangements of pieces by Haydn and Beethoven, a traditional Irish folk tune orchestrated by Seamus Doyle and a musical story of a girl and a tiger in the pandemic, narrated by Raphael Kelly.
Children from the different orchestras introduced elements in the programme and exchanged jokes with Smiler the Clown.
Pet photographs of the players pets and their drawings are also on view on the recording above.
A highlight of the programme was the introduction of one lucky pet from each orchestra to the audience Live on Zoom– these include a snake, a rabbit, a hen, a dwarf hamster, guinea pigs, a parrot, a tortoise, fish as well as beloved cats and a dog.
